Rafael "Rafi" Cruz Cortez

Rafi, originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, was born October 24, 1959 and died on May 28, 2017 at the age of 57. He had been a long-time resident at The Road Home shelter (about 12 years) when he began experiencing seizures and confusion. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, Rafi was referred to The INN Between where he could receive hospice care and be looked after when the seizures happened. Rafi enjoyed visits from friends and taking long walks in the neighborhood and by the Jordan river.

Rafi is believed to be survived by his wife and son who may live in Guadalajara.

A kind and gentle soul, Rafi was well-liked by the staff and volunteers at The Road Home and The INN Between. Although he spoke little English, Rafi communicated with his warm smile and a fist bump. He was comforted by receiving big hugs, especially as his confusion worsened.

Rafi’s final days were peaceful and filled with love and attention. He received around-the-clock companionship by our volunteers and staff who read, sang, played music or simply sat with him in silence, holding his hand. We will miss Rafi dearly and were honored to become his family in his final two months.

The public is invited to attend the memorial service for Rafi at 11 am on June 27, 2017 at The INN Between, 340 S. Goshen Street, Salt Lake City, UT. A complimentary luncheon will follow the service.
