David Coddington

We remember David, born March 4, 1951, who passed away just four days after arriving at The INN Between. Though our time with him was brief, it was filled with warmth, sincerity, and moments of genuine connection.

Before coming to us, David had been rough sleeping, living out of a tent and caring for his animals, and was hospitalized due to complications. Bedbound and struggling, he was transferred here for comfort and support. While we never learned much about the details of his life, we were fortunate to learn about his heart.

During a visit with our activities coordinator, David shared his loneliness, his disbelief that he could stay somewhere safe, and his relief in hearing, “This is your room. You are home.” He expressed acceptance of his final days, saying all he wanted was to be warm.

One phrase he spoke stays with us:“I live on hope.”

David loved hot sugary coffee—with exactly five creams and five sugars—and said the food that tasted like home to him was a meatball sub. He wished he could have one more. When told that volunteers could sit with him, he worried he had no family. When he learned that companionship didn’t depend on family, his face softened. He welcomed the idea with gratitude.

David passed away peacefully, surrounded by care, respect, and kindness—not alone, and not forgotten.

Rest in peace, David. Your hope, your gentle spirit, and your longing for warmth and connection will remain with us. 🦋
