The INN Between Celebrates Another Year of Supporting Homeless Populations

Since the organization’s founding, 26 “unique miracles” have rebounded from end-of-life care to be placed in long-term housing

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. — This year, The INN Between, Utah’s only residential end-of-life and medical respite facility for adults experiencing homelessness, has witnessed more dignified deaths of residents in hospice. It has also highlighted those that come in on hospice care with six months or less left to live--yet many have overcome their diagnosis and even moved out into more permanent housing with support from The INN Between. Join us this year as we celebrate these remarkable journeys of resilience and renewal at our annual benefit concert, Tune INN on June 7th. Three former residents, “miracles,” will be in attendance to share their inspiring stories during our program. Thanks to a generous match from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, donations at this event will be doubled!

The INN Between currently has 30 beds designated for medical respite patients who are not sick enough to be in a hospital but are too sick to return to a motel, encampment, or homeless resource center, given their high medical needs. There are also 30 Assisted Living Facility Type II beds, which are reserved for people who are terminally ill or need help with their activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, toileting, and medication management: making them an inappropriate placement for motels, encampments, or homeless resource centers. To date over 800 clients have been served.

“Our mission is to provide a safe home for people who have nowhere to turn during a medical crisis or at end of life,” Jillian Olmsted, Executive Director of The INN Between explained. “We have seen over the last nine years that some of our clients coming in for hospice care have been able to stabilize and ultimately recover because of stable access to shelter, medical attention, and medications. By providing residents access to safe medical housing, basic needs, and critical healthcare, The INN Between is intervening at the right time for medical recuperative care.”

The INN Between is Utah’s pioneering end-of-life and medical respite facility for adults experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to prevent the tragedy of vulnerable individuals dying on the streets of our community. The INN Between helps people experience the end of life housed, not homeless, and provides compassionate 24/7 caregiver support and access to professional hospice care. It is also a place where people who are too sick to be on the streets but not sick enough to be in the hospital can recuperate or become eligible for life-saving interventions such as cancer treatment.
